A scientific seminar to mark World Tuberculosis Day, aimed at raising health awareness and promoting prevention and treatment

To mark World Tuberculosis Day on 24 March 2026, the Iraqi Society of Microbiology organised an educational scientific seminar aimed at highlighting the importance of raising health awareness about tuberculosis and the need to promote a culture of health to limit its spread within the community.

The seminar addressed tuberculosis as one of the major bacterial diseases that continues to pose a global health challenge, reviewing the most common symptoms among those affected and the importance of early diagnosis in reducing complications and limiting transmission.

The seminar also addressed the first-line treatment regimen using antibiotics and its effectiveness in treating standard cases, as well as explaining the second-line treatment regimen for cases resistant to the first-line treatment, whilst emphasising the need to adhere to the treatment plan to ensure recovery and prevent the development of resistance.

The seminar highlighted the importance of collaboration between healthcare institutions and diagnostic laboratories to provide the fastest means of early detection and deliver appropriate healthcare during the course of the infection, thereby contributing to controlling the disease and limiting its spread.

This symposium forms part of the Society’s ongoing efforts to support awareness-raising and scientific activities, and to strengthen its role in serving the community and raising health awareness regarding communicable diseases.
